Designing spyscape's interactive experience

Role
UX Designer

SPYSCAPE is an interactive spy museum in New York, where visitors take part in six interactive challenges to discover which type of spy they could be. The interactives are scattered across the museum's permanent exhibition, each one designed to fit the theme of a different spycraft.

I was part of the team that developed these experiences, which can now also be experienced at Spyscape's most recent opening in London.

Role

As part of the in-house creative team, I worked as a UX Designer building the interactive challenges. Over the course of less than a year, I collaborated on the development of the concept, contributed to lo-fi and hi-fi interactive prototypes, off-site and on-site user testing, and assisted on the production of video and audio content.

I was also fortunate to travel to the museum ahead of opening to carry out a full mock-day test of the interactives in situ.

Encryption

Using a cypher to encrypt and decrypt messages, the visitor communicates with an agent in the field and attempts to instruct them to safety.

Deception

This challenge explores how micro-expressions can reveal when someone is lying, using facial recognition software to analyse the visitor's own expressions before testing their ability to spot the same signs in others.

Surveillance

This challenge tests visitors' observation skills, using voice recognition software to answer timed questions about footage from more than 60 CCTV camera feeds. Fun fact: I feature in some of the scenes.

Special Ops

A spy experience isn't complete without a laser tunnel, which, along with the sound and lighting design, provides a big shot of adrenaline.

Question Stations

These challenges focus on assessing the visitor's personality, risk and mental ability. I led this interactive from concept to production working alongside ex-spy trainers to produce an accurate and reliable test while maintaining a good level of engagement.

Debrief

This is where all the clues come together. Visitors download their scores into the debrief station, where a spy-role algorithm, built by ex-spy trainers, gets to work revealing exactly the type of spy they could be.
